When we first moved to live in Cusco, we thought it would be like most places in Peru, where bread is the staple for breakfast and so finding a good bakery would not be hard.......WRONG.

It’s fairly difficult to find a bakery open early in the morning, and if you do find one it will just serve cheap coffee, and bread, that although economical, can tend to be low quality.

Over the past months we have been searching out some of the best bakeries, especially in the centre of Cusco, so that you can satisfy your need for good bread, coffee and even throw in a pastry to help you along the way as you trek around the historic sights. Not all the bakeries reviewed open early, so check out the opening times posted here which we will update from time to time. We have also included walking time from the Plaza de Armas, the main square of Cusco, for your reference.

Bread & Breakfast - Ciccolina

From one of the most well known restaurants in Cusco, Ciccolina/Baco, they have brought class and style to Cusco with their own breakfast bar and bakery that is well worth a visit. Walking through the door is like walking back in time to a traditional, friendly and good quality family bakers.

The bakery has a very warm feel to it, due to the antique wooden surroundings and very good service. You can find a small selection of cheeses hard to get hold of in other parts of cusco like, brie, camembert and manchego. The bread is a little more expensive than the other bakeries in this hub but is of very good quality and worth it. If the bakery is shut and you would still like to buy their bread, you can ask inside the restaurant Ciccolina and they will be more than happy to help you out, so don't be embarrassed to ask.

Just like its partner restaurants, they offer amazing quality products of artisan breads made by Felipe the baker. It is the perfect start to the day taking breakfast here and then later on in the day why not return for lunch or dinner at one of their restaurants. The restaurant is so popular that from 5pm onwards you will need to make a reservation. In a future Hub we will review their restaurants for you.

The smell of fresh bread will draw you in and the personal attention will ensure you come back for more. Ask Felipe about any of the products on offer and he will be more than willing to answer any questions you might have.

This bakery is located under the stairway that leads to the balcony of the restaurant Ciccolina. From the road, enter through the large colonial doorway which takes you back in time to a beautiful courtyard surrounded by a variety of shops selling Peruvian artisanal goods. Although the bakery is not open in the evening, this is still a beautiful place to visit later on when ambience lighting illuminates the courtyard. And as a bonus, this bakery is just a few meters away from the famous street with the 12 sided inca stone.

Don Esteban y Don Pancho

This bakery/cafe is has a modern but cosy ambience. Here you can sample high quality products that the company boast are 100% natural. Don Esteban y Don Pancho has 3 different locations in Cusco, so check out their website if you are not close to the plaza.

This company started off as a very small bakery, but due to high quality products and good references passed on by word of mouth has grown to a chain, without losing the personal touch in service that is sometimes very hard to find in Perú.

With a commercial espresso machine it makes a great stop at anytime through the day, and if coffee is not to your liking, try one of their tropical fruit juices. The bakery offers artesian style bread ranging from french sticks, cobblers, ciabatta and french bread. A variety of pastries are on offer along with cakes and desserts. Hot and cold sandwiches, salads or lasagne are available if you are making a lunch stop.

Delimonasterio

The bakery is small but has a good selection of natural breads, delicate looking desserts and pastries. You can also buy juice here, although it’s a pre bottled product. Recently they have installed machines that produce fresh juices or chicha. There is a small espresso machine if you would like to get one to go or drink by the small bar. If it’s a light snack you are looking for, you will find available a selection of pizzas, sandwiches or empanadas which are Peruvian pasties.

The location of this bakery, next to plazoleta nazarenas and inset in inca walls next to the old 1592 monastery, which now serves as an Orient Express Hotel, makes it the perfect setting for munching on a crispy onion bread stick.

The bakery receives its baked products from the Hotel Monasterio whose specialist baker produces the highest quality products not just for the hotel but also for the Hiram Bingham train which belongs to Orient Express and takes tourists on a journey hard to forget as they head to Machapicchu, one of the seven wonders of the world.

La Bondiet

This bakery is in a class of its own, although the breads are still very reasonably priced. Hidden next door to one of the best hotels in Cusco and possibly the best in Peru, this is a bakery unknown to most tourists but because of the very high quality products it is well worth a visit.

This is a definite stop on your travels. This is one of the more popular cafes in cusco and the one on Heladeros seems to be the busiest, so getting a seat will be harder in the evenings. This is not so much a bakery like the others in this hub, but they do provide excellent espresso’s, sandwiches, cakes and pastries, like the traditional peruvian pasty called an "empanada," which is usually eaten with slices of lime to squeeze over it. They also produce high quality and attractive desserts and hand crafted chocolates.

Qosqo Maki (hands of cusco)

Qosqo Maki is a small bakery with seating for about 8 people. They have a good commercial express machine to give you that caffeine shot to start the day. Because this is a bakery/ workshop, occasionally they try out new recipes like Bagels that do end up for sale in their shop. When we first came to live in Cuzco, we were craving good quality bread, so we were thrilled to find this place. Although the selection is small, it is very good quality and you won't be disappointed.

Here you will find a small variety of breads from french sticks, white & wholemeal, rustic loaves and dinner rolls. Also a limited but good quality selection of pastries, croissants (plain and chocolate), danish, rolls with currants, bagels, and more. Later in the day around 5pm you can check on the counter and quite often they have available "Visperas", a selection bag of baked goods they are clearing out for S/.3.00. You will find the staff to be very friendly and helpful although they don't speak much english, which is not a problem if you have a nice smile and know how to point!

My Recomendations

  • My first choice for really good quality bread would be to go to Delimonasterio
  • Second choice : For Breads would be Bread & Breakfast o Don Esteban y Don Pancho, the breads are of similar quality
  • For a good coffee and to sit down and relax while you eat a delicious dessert, my recommendation would be 1st La Bondiet and 2nd Don Esteban y Don Pancho
  • For a quick, grab your bread and go! Qosqo Maki

  • All these places mentioned are of high quality and very reasonably priced. You will find they are all tourist friendly and will not purposely overcharge. Each one has very high quality products and good higene codes.
